Gumbi Education Fund News Visit to Gumbi in 2023 by Madeleine Lane-Radcliffe and Sophie Groenheijde

Visit to Gumbi in 2023 by Madeleine Lane-Radcliffe and Sophie Groenheijde

We were deeply grateful for the opportunity to visit Gumbi Village in summer 2023. The culture in and around Nambuma was a true inspiration and we learnt so much from their positivity and warmth towards us. Visiting numerous schools, such as St. Martin’s gave us the chance to learn about the Malawian system of education, opening our eyes to how far they have come but also to what has yet to be achieved. We recognise and admire the role that the Gumbi Education Fund has played in the local development of the school system and the support and motivation it provides for the students. Additionally, meeting with the university students was both fun and fascinating as it provided us with another viewpoint from more advanced, older students. With both these visits, and our shorter trips to the nursery and primary boys’ school in Nambuma, we observed a great deal about the education system.

Our visit to the developing permaculture project was equally enriching and we gained a refreshing perspective on sustainable agriculture. The inspiration and admiration that we gained with only two weeks in Malawi under the wonderful care of Patrick is huge and we feel honoured to now be on the board of Trustees, assisting the Fund’s further future development.
